OUR STORY

Sam grew up in Nevada helping his Grandpa and Uncle raise cattle and farm hay. As he got older he worked with a local man harvesting hay for several farmers in the area. Sam’s family moved around a bit and eventually ended up selling the farm in Nevada. Sam also really enjoyed computers and after college, Sam moved to Boise and started working in IT.

I was born and raised in Boise and the farthest I ever lived was Payette. I have been a waitress, tended bar, worked in retail and have been a teacher for the last 19 years.

We love to camp and spend time outdoors. We talked about how once we retired we’d love to travel the country in our RV and just spend time in various different places working odd jobs as needed to fund the next leg of our adventure. This led to us making a plan to retire early, when our youngest graduated from high school. We also worked to set up our RV so that we could spend long amounts of time away from power hook-ups so we looked into solar power. We bought our panels from a lovely couple in Kooskia who had an amazing self-sufficient homestead. This sparked the desire to find land where we could do something similar. We got a few backyard chickens and started getting fresh eggs daily. We started buying grass fed and finished beef from Facebook.

Our plans went through many variations but in the back of my mind I always remembered Sam telling me the stories of taking care of the cows and growing and harvesting the hay. I’d often thought that maybe once we retired that maybe that could be one of our odd jobs to fund our RV travels, that Sam could help someone with their hay. As we had more conversations I realized I didn’t want to just occasionally work for someone else on their farm, I wanted all of that for myself. So, with absolutely no experience I decided I wanted to farm and raise animals. We always wanted land that would give us our own “space” and had planned to raise animals to feed our family. We knew we would have to feed those animals in the winter and rather than buy hay, we could grow our own and maybe if we could get enough land we could have enough to sell and make some money on the side. So we started looking for land. And watching Youtube videos, lots and lots of Youtube videos. And the more I watched, the more excited I got. I wanted cows and pigs and chickens and I wanted to learn how to drive a tractor and cut and bale hay. Sam watched and started learning about regenerative farming which sounded amazing. I had thoughts of how awesome it would be to have a farm store or sell things in farmers markets. I love meeting people and hearing their stories. I love teaching and sharing information with people. I’m not very good at “putting myself out there” though so this is all very scary but exciting at the same time, which makes me think it is the right thing to do and will all work out in the end.

Why Idaho Pasture Pigs?

Through the process of looking at different options for livestock we came across the Idaho Pasture Pig (IPP) breed. I've always wanted a pig so I was very excited about this opportunity. I thought the name was great since we lived in Idaho at the time but it turns out this pig has nothing to do with Idaho.

The description from the Idaho Pasture Pig registry describes the breed as "These are true “grazing” pigs and are very gentle in nature, have great personalities, are easy to work with, are smaller in size then traditional pigs, are great mothers, are able to live outdoors all year round, and can grow extremely well with a diet of primarily grass."

I was so excited by the idea of a pig that could eat grass! Everything about this breed just seemed perfect and the more we read and watched about them the more perfect they seemed. And they are!! They can be fence trained and they truly have great personalities!

We got Poppy first and she is amazing!! She is curious and loves to see what you are doing. She loves belly rubs and drinking from a hose. And pigs are smart!! I taught her to sit before getting her food. A few weeks later we got our boar Dexter, another gilt; Petunia and one we were raising as a feeder that our son named Krispy. They all have great unique personalities.

And the meat from Idaho Pasture Pigs tastes better than any pork I've ever eaten!! It has so much flavor and is incredibly tender and juicy!! If you've never tried it, I highly recommend it!! So in our goal to raise food for ourselves and others, we have chosen the Idaho Pasture Pig and I am so glad we did!!

OUR GOALS

We’ve found our land, now the journey begins. We still have so much to learn and I’m sure we will go through many variations to our plan but ultimately we strive to be self-sufficient and raise and grow the majority of our own food. We plan to work our land and animals in a way to make the soil richer, the planet better, the animals healthier and happier and therefore as nutritious and tasty as possible. We look forward to meeting amazing new people and expanding our community both locally and beyond. We would love to provide products to people that will offer the most nutrients, best taste and value for their families. Thanks for joining us on our journey!
